1. Packaged Bread
Packaged bread is soft, fluffy, and lasts for days – but at a price. To extend its shelf life, manufacturers add an amino acid called L-cysteine, which is often sourced from human hair, duck feathers, or pig bristles. Hair is sometimes collected from salon floors in China, processed, and added to bread. If that doesn’t sound appealing, switching to fresh bakery bread made with simple ingredients like flour, water, and yeast might be a better option.
2. Ketchup
Ketchup is a staple condiment, but commercial brands are filled with high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, and artificial thickeners. Some brands even substitute real tomatoes with papaya or melon to cut costs. Additionally, the heating process during production strips the remaining tomatoes of essential nutrients. Homemade or organic ketchup with fewer additives is a healthier alternative.
3. Commercial Ice Cream
Ice cream might seem like a simple treat, but many brands add propylene glycol, a food-grade antifreeze, to keep the ice cream soft even when frozen. Stabilizers like guar gum and carrageenan prevent ice crystals from forming, ensuring a smooth texture. Air is also whipped into the product, meaning you’re paying for less actual ice cream. Homemade ice cream made with cream, sugar, and natural flavors is a purer option.
4. Hot Dogs
Hot dogs are made from animal trimmings and byproducts that don’t qualify for other meat products. These scraps are ground up, mixed with corn syrup, salt, and liquid smoke, and shaped into the classic hot dog form. The high sodium and processed nature of hot dogs have been linked to heart disease and other health issues. Eating them occasionally won’t hurt, but regular consumption may pose risks.
