Taylor Sheridan has turned 1923’s season 2 story into a slow burn, not wishing to immediately reward audiences with the Spencer and Alex chemistry that made season 1 so fantastic. In their respective journeys to Montana, each has faced terrible conflicts.
Spencer finds himself tied to the Italian Mafia in New York, forced to travel to Fort Worth to deliver a package, while Alex spends much of episode 3 passing through the unforgiving immigration system at Ellis Island. The Duttons left at the ranch continue to crumble in the cruel winter.
Will The Pickpocket Prevent Alex Dutton From Reaching Montana?
Alex May Miss Her Train To Montana, But The Journey Won’t End Here

1923 season 2, episode 3, ended on a massive cliffhanger, fulfilling an aspect of the show that had been teased throughout the episode. Alex Dutton’s journey in the episode sees her finally arriving in New York without the required papers to pass through freely, so she’s forced to undergo the disturbingly impersonal immigration process, offering some commentary on the expectations and reality of arriving in the United States.
This is a significant part of the episode, with a harshly realistic depiction of entering the country during the time period.

Upon touching ground in New York, Alex is told by multiple people to be weary of pickpockets, but she makes it to Grand Central Terminal without any problems. She purchases her ticket and manages to last until her train is just about to arrive.
However, the episode’s final scene shows her entering the women’s washroom as a devious-looking man eyes her, seemingly cornering her. With her train just about to arrive, she’ll have to contend with this man to make it in time.
If he takes her money and ticket, she’ll be forced to find an alternate route to Montana, setting up new challenges for her.
Given how far Alex has come and how much hardship she’s faced already, it would be terrible to see her robbed, or worse, at this moment. It seems possible that she’ll fight the man off, demonstrating how much she’s grown since 1923 season 1 began.
As for whether she’ll catch her train, the stakes of this matter aren’t too high, as she can always board the next one. If he takes her money and ticket, she’ll be forced to find an alternate route to Montana, setting up new challenges for her.
Luca’s De@th At The Roadblock & What It Means For Spencer Explained
Luca’s De@th May Have Foreshadowed Spencer’s Fate

This moment could be foreshadowing something dark for Spencer at the end of the season, suggesting that he may have to give up his life for his family.
Still, that doesn’t mean that he can’t defend them first, and with Alex being pregnant, he may still further the family line down to the Duttons we know from Yellowstone. As for Spencer’s journey going forward, he might end up linking with Teonna Rainwater and that conflict, which isn’t too far from his location at the border between Oklahoma and Texas.
Why Elizabeth Is Leaving Jack Dutton After The Wolf Attack
Elizabeth Is Tired Of The Horrible Dutton Ranch Life

It’s not impossible that Elizabeth can still turn around and remain with the Duttons, but she seems adamant that this life isn’t for her. Even if she survives this winter, more winters are going to come, and she’s not unreasonable in wishing for a better life for herself.
It’s possible that, once all is said and done with Donald Whitfield and Banner Creighton, Jack could leave with Elizabeth to join her in Boston, establishing a new line of Duttons for future Yellowstone spinoffs that we didn’t know about.

What’s Going To Happen With Teonna Rainwater & Renaud?
The Rainwaters & The Duttons May Come Together Soon
Teonna Rainwater, likely the ancestor of Yellowstone’s Thomas Rainwater, is still on the run, heading through Oklahoma in an attempt to escape the law by reaching Mexico.
In this episode, she reaches the Texas border. She’s still pursued by Renaud and Marshal Kent, who seem to be experiencing a rift in ideology, which may cause them to separate later in the season. The question through the remainder of 1923 will be which man can get his hands on her first.
Importantly, Teonna Rainwater needs to somehow make her way back up to Montana after everything transpires. Given that Spencer isn’t far from her, he could end up helping her and forming some form of cautious partnership, foreshadowing the events of Yellowstone’s ending. This would show how ties between the Duttons and Rainwaters were established in 1923.
