What Does The Future Hold For The Dutton Family?

There has been speculation that 1923’s feature-length season finale would be its last. Similar to Taylor Sheridan’s highly acclaimed prequel 1883, 1923 wrapped up all ongoing storylines with a neat bow while simultaneously leaving the viewer wondering, what’s next?

In a recent article from Variety, it was officially confirmed that 1923 will not have a third season; instead, the storyline will continue in another prequel titled 1944.

It is reasonable to expect that the 1944 series will delve into the Dutton family’s experiences during World War II. Sheridan’s works have not romanticized the eras in which they are set; instead, he portrays these time periods as they likely were. The combination of a harsh analysis of a brutal war with Sheridan’s already intense filmmaking style is sure to be an intriguing experience for fans.

The series will likely follow John Dutton II, the son of Spencer and Alexandra, who will be 21 years old. The finale of 1923 also made it clear that Spencer will be alive. When he was asked if he would like to be a part of 1944, he responded:

“Listen, I know that ‘1944’ is a thing that they are planning on doing here, and maybe we see Spencer in 1944. That is something I would be interested in doing.”

What Is Next For The Characters Of 1923?

Sheridan wrapped up many of the storylines in 1923, including whether Spencer and Alexandra would finally reunite. What will be Whitfield’s fate? Who will save the Dutton ranch? Will Elizabeth stay in Montana?

While the two-hour finale addressed many storylines, there were still a few unanswered questions.

For example, in a previous episode, Elizabeth is bitten by a wolf and must receive rabies shots. As she is getting the shots, the doctor confirms that she is pregnant.

However, her pregnancy is not mentioned in the season finale, leaving fans to wonder what happens to the baby. Will this be addressed in 1944?

Additionally, Teonna is released and is not sentenced for any of her crimes due to a lack of evidence and witnesses. In her final appearance, we see the young outlaw riding away on horseback. What happens next? Will Teonna get her own spinoff, or will she have a role in 1944?

Although we know Spencer Dutton will live for another 45 years, what will happen during that time? And who will be the widow he finds comfort in while still on earth?

All these storylines and many more create excitement for a potential follow-up prequel series.
