Yellowstone Returns to CBS With New Spinoff Starring Fan Favorite Character
Yellowstone fans haven’t seen the last of Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton. A new expansion in the Taylor Sheridan-created franchise is reportedly in the works for CBS.
According to Puck’s Matt Belloni on Threads, CBS is developing a procedural series that would focus on Grimes’ livestock commissioner and former Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton, the younger brother of Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton.
This is separate from the previously announced spinoff focusing on Reilly’s Beth and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler which is now in pre-production for Paramount Network.
If the new spinoff moves forward, it would mark a return of the Yellowstone universe to CBS, which has aired edited episodes from the original series in the past. Unlike most CBS procedural dramas, which are produced in-house by CBS Studios, the potential spinoff would instead be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios.
While not mentioned, it is believed that Kelsey Asbille and Brecken Merrill will likely also return for the Yellowstone spinoff, reprising their respective roles as Kayce’s wife Monica and their son Tate. Exact plot details are currently under wraps for the potential spinoff.
When fans last saw Grimes’ Kayce, he had just successfully sold the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation for $1.25 per acre, the same price his ancestors purchased it for, in the Yellowstone series finale. However, as part of the deal, Kayce was able to keep a small part of the ranch to live on with his family.
The Yellowstone Universe Continues to Expand
With the original Yellowstone series ending, possibly prematurely due to Kevin Costner’s exit as series lead John Dutton, Sheridan and Paramount have announced several franchise offshoots, the first of which is expected to premiere in 2025.
Titled The Madison, the standalone extension of the franchise is set in the present day and stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Patrick J. Adams, among others. The logline for the series states that it will be “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
The other spinoff series in the works will center around Reilly and Hauser’s fan-favorite Yellowstone couple, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Unlike the other franchise extensions, this offshoot is expected to carry Yellowstone in the title. Hauser addressed the spinoff in December 2024, saying, “We will see what happens over the next year or so and we’ll see what’s next. Hopefully, we can continue to get in people’s living rooms and entertain them the way we have over the last seven years. For me, to be able to do that, to educate people, enlighten and entertain them is always the dream.”
Fans can also head over to Paramount+ to stream the second season of Yellowstone prequel 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The new season premiered on the streamer in February, with a new episode dropping weekly until April 6. As for the original Yellowstone series, it’s available to stream on Peacock.
